Around 10% of people with a Learning Disability also live with Diabetes

For some, living with a learning disability may reduce the ability to; understand new and/ or complex information, learn new skills and cope independently, which may impact upon the management of their diabetes. However, most people with a learning disability want to be actively involved in the management of diabetes, if living with the condition.

Effective communication is a key factor in supporting people with a learning disability who are managing their diabetes, below are some top tips to support the provision of effective care to people living with a learning disability:

  • Think about methods of communication and what you want to inform/ask them

  • Allow time and provide support for the person to comprehend and respond to any questions

  • Speak to the individual person and not just their supporter or caregiver

  • Help support the person to understand what diabetes is and what their treatment(s) are

  • Prioritise discussion about things that are important for the person to understand

  • Complicated and an overloading of information increases the risk of confusion, anxiety and poor decision making

  • Try to break information down into smaller chunks so that it makes things easier for the person to understand

  • Consider providing visual or audible aids to support discussions, e.g. leaflets and videos

  • Identify who is providing support for the person and how they are receiving support

  • Understand the person’s current dietary intake and try to find small and simple ways of making healthy choices

  • Ensure discussion about physical activity and its importance. Identify the types of physical activity that the person likes to do and find ways for them to engage. For example, local classes, particularly that are specialised for people living with a learning disability
