New Safer Ramadan eLearning module

EDEN has launched its new Safer Ramadan eLearning module, which is available to all health care professionals via diabetes template on System One (EMIS coming in the next few weeks).

The holy month of Ramadan is an important part of the Muslim calendar, during which daylight fasting is observed by healthy Muslims.

Many Muslims with diabetes, even though they are exempt from fasting will still participate, even when it is against medical advice.

Consequently this is an ongoing challenge for healthcare professionals to support and facilitate safe fasting for Muslims with diabetes.

The eLearning module aims to:

  • Increase healthcare professionals knowledge and confidence to support and advise Muslim patients wishing to fast during Ramadan

  • Provides a  quick-glance guide to help risk stratify patients with diabetes wishing to fast

  • Enables healthcare professionals to tailor advice to individual needs

On completion of the Safer Ramadan eLearning module a printable certificate of completion for CPD is available, as well as embedded infographics which are available to print for use within surgery.

The Safer Ramadan eLearning module is part of the ‘A Safer Ramadan’ diabetes education programme which has been commissioned by the LLR Clinical Commissioning Groups and is available to all practices and comes in the form of two elements:

  • Patient Education - a 3-hour education for anyone with Type 2 diabetes wishing to fast - electronic referral details can be found on PRISM.

  • HCPs eLearning - to support the roll-out of the patient education and to ensure all practice staff are up-to-date on all current advice we have produced the Safer Ramadan eLearning module.

Alongside this, we have a team of Community Champions across the city helping to spread the word about fasting safely with diabetes for Ramadan.
