Diabetes training launched to support “excellent” patient care

The award-winning EDEN education team at Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) has partnered with the clinical diabetes service at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) to ensure all healthcare staff within its service have access to EDEN’s Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) education programme, which is launching on World Diabetes Day (Wednesday 14 November).

Dr Ian Lawrence, Consultant and Head of Service Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine for UHL, explains: “Hybrid Closed Loop systems are transforming the lives of people living with diabetes on a daily basis.  This teaching and training package, developed by EDEN in conjunction with UHL’s diabetes service, will upskill all and provide knowledge for excellent, safe patient care.”

This programme blends EDENS credibility in education and the outstanding videos available on the Diabetes Technology Network UK’s website. Two educational packages are on offer, Essentials and Advanced, and both are tailored depending on staff group.

The Essentials package is designed for healthcare professionals who support individuals with type 1 diabetes using hybrid closed-loop systems. This package provides foundational knowledge, including an understanding of the technology, how it works, eligibility criteria, key safety considerations, and guidance on data review.

The Advanced package is tailored for healthcare professionals in insulin pump teams or maternity services who support individuals with type 1 diabetes using hybrid closed-loop systems. This package includes all Essentials content and extends to cover additional topics related to pregnancy, including preconception, antenatal, and postnatal care.

Hybrid Closed Loop education is essential and recommended by NICE (2023).
